A structure formed when a mass of fluid rock with a different specific gravity from the surrounding rocks moves vertically due to buoyancy and intrudes into the strata above it. An example of this is known to be rock salt, which rises as a diapir due to buoyancy and creates a dome-shaped structure around it.
