It belongs to the Finnic group of the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic language family, and together with Cheremis (Mari) it forms Volga-Finnic. It is spoken in a wide area, mainly in the Republic of Mordovia, south of the city of Kazan in the middle reaches of the Volga River. There are 1,154,000 speakers (1989), of which about 70% have it as their native language. It is divided into the Erza dialect and the Moksha dialect, but because it is difficult to understand each other, they have their own standard written language. ウラル語族のフィン・ウゴル語派の中でフィン語系に属し,チェレミス語(マリ語)とともにボルガ・フィン語を形成する。ボルガ川の中流にあるカザン市の南側でモルドビア共和国を中心に広い範囲で話されている。言語人口は115万4000(1989)で,そのうちの約7割が母語としている。エルジャErza方言とモクシャMoksha方言に分かれているが,相互に理解が困難であるため別々に標準文語を定めている。名詞は12格に変化し定語尾をもつ。
