Hisao Tanabe
Born: August 16, 1883 in Tokyo
[Died] March 5, 1984. Tokyo Musicologist. A pioneer in the study of Asian music, including Japan. Graduated from the Department of Physics at the University of Tokyo in 1907, he majored in acoustics at the graduate school, and also studied acoustic psychology and physiology. He also studied violin at the Tokyo Music School's elective course, harmony and composition from N. Peri, and Japanese music such as Nagauta, Noh chants, and Gagaku orchestra and dance at the Tanaka Shohei Institute of Traditional Japanese Music and other institutions. In his research, he conducted field surveys in Korea in 1946, as well as China, Taiwan, and the South Sea Islands, and made an effort to study and introduce them to the public. In 1952, he organized the Seiwa Music Society with Miyagi Michio and others, and worked hard to develop new Japanese music. He was awarded the Imperial Academy Prize (1929). He held leading positions in the music world, including as president of the Society for the Study of Oriental Music and as president and advisor of numerous research organizations. His books include "Lectures on Japanese Music" (19), "The First Journey on Music" (23), "Oriental Music Theory" (29), "Collection of Early Modern Japanese Music" (31), "Collection of Japanese Folk Songs" (32), "Outline of Japanese Music" (40), "History of Japanese Music" (63), "History of Shamisen Music" (63), and "Japanese Musical Instruments" (64).

音楽学者。日本をはじめ東洋の音楽研究の先駆者。 1907年東京大学物理学科卒業,大学院では音響学を専攻し,音響心理学,生理学をも修めた。一方実技の面でも東京音楽学校選科でバイオリンを,N.ペリから和声学と作曲法を,田中正平邦楽研究所ほかで長唄,謡曲,雅楽の管弦や舞などの日本音楽を習得。調査研究では,21年の朝鮮をはじめとして中国,台湾,南洋群島各地に現地調査を行い,その研究と紹介に努めた。一方 27年には宮城道雄らと成和音楽会を組織し,新日本音楽の発展に尽力。帝国学士院賞受賞 (1929) 。東洋音楽学会会長をはじめ,多数研究団体の会長,顧問として楽界の指導的地位にあった。著書『日本音楽講話』 (19) ,『第一音楽紀行』 (23) ,『東洋音楽論』 (29) ,『近世日本音楽集』 (31) ,『日本俗曲集』 (32) ,『日本音楽概説』 (40) ,『日本音楽史』 (63) ,『三味線音楽史』 (63) ,『日本の楽器』 (64) 。
