...A paper figurine in the shape of a dog. In the past, it was called otogi-inu (fairy-tale dog), tonoi-inu (night watch dog), or inubako (dog box). Since the Muromachi period, it was customary for nobles and samurai families to place a box-shaped papier-mache dog called an otogi-inu or inubako in the delivery room at the time of birth to protect the mother during childbirth.
