Japanese: やな(簗) - やな

The fishing method of partitioning off a part of a river, lining up trees and bamboo to block the passage of fish and catching them is seen all over the world, especially in Southeast Asia, but in China, the Zhou Li states that "Liang is the water volcano, the water volcano forms a channel, and the channel is held up by a fence," and in Japan, "himasagiru yan" (a trap for catching sweetfish) can be seen in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. "Yana" is a Japanese character, and it can be written as "fish volcano" but read as "yana." A part of the gap between densely packed twigs and thin bamboo is left open, and a "sudana" (a rack) is stretched diagonally there, and the device catches the swimming fish on the trap. A trap with a trap instead of a rack is called a "uke-yana" (a trap trap), and a bag net is installed called a "fukuroami-yan" (a trap trap with a net).

河川の一部を仕切って木や竹を並べ立て，魚の通路をふさいでこれを捕らえるという漁法は，東南アジアを中心に世界各地で見られるが，中国では《周礼》に〈梁は水偃なり，水を偃きて関空をなし，笱を以てその空を承く〉とあり，日本ではアユを捕るための〈ひまさぎる簗〉は《古事記》《日本書紀》にも見られる。〈簗〉は和字であり，〈魚梁〉と書いて〈やな〉と読ませることもある。小枝や細竹をびっしり並べた間の一部をあけて，そこに〈簀棚（すだな）〉を斜めに張って，泳いでくる魚をその簀の上に受けて捕らえる装置で，簀棚の代りに筌（うけ）をおくものを〈筌簗（うけやな）〉，袋網を設置するものを〈袋網簗〉という。
