It has long been a key transportation hub connecting Germany and Italy, and even today three railway lines cross here, located halfway along the Romantische Strasse. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it was the center of economic prosperity in southern Germany, producing many internationally renowned merchants, including the Fugger family. Since the 19th century, the cotton industry has developed, and it is now a center of the machinery industry. The city has many historical buildings, such as the town hall, Fuggerei, and Schaetzler House, and H. Holbein the Elder, L. Mozart, and Brecht were all born here. ...
