A marine fish of the family Whale Shark in the order Lamniformes (illustration). It is also called whale shark. Its English name is "whale shark" and comes from its huge size. It is found in tropical to temperate open oceans all over the world. It travels north with bonito on warm currents in early summer near the waters of Japan. Its mouth is located near the tip of its snout, and it has several vertical stripes and white or yellow spots that run from its back to its tail. It is the largest of all living fish, reaching a total length of 18 meters and weighing several tens of tons. It is docile in nature and does not attack humans. ネズミザメ目ジンベイザメ科の海産魚(イラスト)。ジンベエザメともいう。英名はwhale sharkといい,その巨体に由来する。全世界の熱帯から温帯にかけての外洋域に分布する。日本近海には初夏に暖流にのってカツオとともに北上してくる。口が吻端(ふんたん)近くにあり,背中から尾にかけて数本の縦縞と白色または黄色の斑紋があるのが特徴。現生の魚類中最大で,全長18mに達し,体重は数十tに及ぶ。性質はおとなしく人間を襲うことはない。
