Gerrard Winstanley

A radical political thinker during the Puritan Revolution. Born in Wigan, Lancashire, the son of a cloth merchant. After publishing his first pamphlet in 1648 in which he made clear his mystical stance, he gradually became more political, and on April 1st the following year, 1649, he led the poor in reclamation of common land in Surrey. This movement, known as the Diggers' Movement, was severely suppressed, but his utopian ideas were later regarded as a precursor to socialism. (Book version published in 1985)

ピューリタン革命期の急進的政治思想家。織物商の子としてランカシャーのウィガンに生まれた。1648年、最初のパンフレットを発表して神秘主義的立場を明らかにしたのち、しだいに政治的色彩を強め、翌1649年4月1日、貧民を率いてサリー州の共有地を開墾し始めるに至った。ディガーズの運動とよばれたこの運動は厳しく弾圧されたが、彼のユートピア思想は、のちに社会主義の先駆と評価されるようになった。（書籍版　1985年）
