A radical political thinker during the Puritan Revolution. Born in Wigan, Lancashire, the son of a cloth merchant. After publishing his first pamphlet in 1648 in which he made clear his mystical stance, he gradually became more political, and on April 1st the following year, 1649, he led the poor in reclamation of common land in Surrey. This movement, known as the Diggers' Movement, was severely suppressed, but his utopian ideas were later regarded as a precursor to socialism.
