Module - module (English spelling)
A standard dimension used in architectural design. It varies by era and region, and in that sense, the Itsuken and Sanshaku dimensions that have long been used in traditional Japanese architecture are also types of modules, but the most common refers to the standard dimension in ancient Western architecture, in which the radius of the base of a pillar is used as the standard for the entire building. Le Corbusier reconstructed this ancient module as the Modulor (Modulor:or is French for gold), which incorporates the idea of the golden section, and emphasized the necessity of functionalist architecture with concrete numbers and illustrations, such as assuming the ideal height of an adult male to be 182.9 cm, and made great use of it in the design of houses as "machines for living in." The strong influence of this can also be seen in Kenzo Tange, who advocated the Japanese-style Modulor, which was adapted to the physique of the Japanese, and adopted it as the standard dimension in the design of the New Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.
