1895‐1952 Soviet Jewish poet, author, and playwright. He began working at the age of eight, and after self-study, studied at Shanyavsky People's University. He began writing in 1917, publishing several collections of poems in Yiddish. His most famous work, The Heap (1922), is a moving collection of poems dedicated to the persecution of the Jews. In 1921, he traveled abroad, visiting Warsaw, Berlin, Paris, and London, and published the collection of poems Radio (1922), in which he criticized the capitalist world and praised the Soviet system. After returning to Russia, he wrote the epic poem Brothers (1929), which depicts the civil war after the Russian Revolution, and Sunrise on the Dnieper (1937), which sings of the construction of socialism and the transformation of humanity.
