A bird of the family Heronidae in the order Ciconiiformes. It is the largest species of heron. Its total length is about 1.2 meters. Its back is blue-gray, its forehead and neck are reddish brown, and its underside below the chest is chestnut brown. It is found in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, and has also been recorded from India. It lives alone or in pairs on lakesides, large marshes, and riverbanks, and preys on fish, frogs, snakes, and sometimes mice and small birds.
