A peasant struggle seen in the Kinai region during the late Edo period, where the commodity economy developed. Also called "kuniso." It began in 1823 with a legal battle over cotton and rapeseed cultivation, in which over 1,000 villages in Settsu and Kawachi provinces joined forces. Led mainly by local merchants, farmers on a county or national level, transcending the sphere of control, participated in the struggle, and opposed the distribution monopoly of feudal lords and urban stock associations, using legal means. The shogunate could not ignore this struggle, and dissolved the stock associations during the Tenpo Reforms. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
