A prehistoric culture that developed in southwestern North America, southeastern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and northern Chihuahua. It was founded on the Cochise culture, which is considered to be an archaic culture, and is characterized by small villages supported by agricultural activities. The Mogollon culture (100 BC - 1400 AD) is divided into five periods. Settlements in periods 1 to 4 consisted of pit dwellings covered with earth and stones, and were located on high ground such as ridges and cliffs. They were accompanied by large dwellings that are thought to be religious structures, but there was no set format for the layout of the dwellings.
