Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute

One of the organizations that make up the National Research and Development Agency, the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute. It is a research and testing institute for forestry and forest products. Its English name is Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, abbreviated as FFPRI. The institute has four departments (forestry research, forestry research, wood research, and strategic research) and the REDD Research and Development Center, which works on forest conservation and sustainable forest management in developing countries to prevent global warming. It also has five branches nationwide (Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kansai, Shikoku, and Kyushu) and the Tama Forest Science Garden in Hachioji, Tokyo, which studies cherry tree varieties and suburban forests. It was first established in Tokyo in 1878 (Meiji 11) as a tree testing station, and was officially launched as the Forestry Experiment Station in 1905 (Meiji 38). In 1910, it was renamed the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute. In 1978 (Showa 53), the head office was moved from Tokyo to Tsukuba Science City, and 10 years later in 1988, the research organization was reorganized and the name was changed to the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute. It was an affiliated organization of the Forestry Agency, an external bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, but became an independent administrative institution in April 2001. In 2007, it merged with the Forest Tree Breeding Center, an independent administrative institution, and in 2008, the Forest and Agricultural Land Improvement Center (renamed the Forest Improvement Center in 2015) was established within the institute, taking over some of the operations of the Green Resources Agency, which was abolished at the end of the same year. In 2015, it became a national research and development agency, and in 2017, it changed its name to the Forest Research and Improvement Organization. As a result, the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute became one of the organizations within the organization.
