Mount Mokoto

A volcano that forms the northern part of the outer rim of the Kussharo Caldera in eastern Hokkaido. It has an elevation of 1,000 meters. The summit forms the border between the towns of Koshimizu, Ozora, and Bihoro, all under the jurisdiction of the Okhotsk General Bureau, and Teshikaga, under the jurisdiction of the Kushiro General Bureau. The southern side forms a steep caldera wall toward Lake Kussharo, while the northern side has gentle foothills that extend toward the Sea of ​​Okhotsk. The mountain is made of old andesite, and the northern slope is a coniferous and broadleaf forest that has been designated as a natural recreational forest. The summit is covered with grassland and alpine plants, and there is a road up to the eastern side of the mountain, making it easy to climb. From the summit you can see Lake Kussharo to the south, as well as Mount Io, Mount Mashu, and Mount Nishibetsu, and to the north Lake Tofutsu, Lake Abashiri, and Lake Saroma.

北海道東部、屈斜路カルデラ(くっしゃろかるでら)外輪山の北部を形成する火山。標高1000メートル。山頂部はオホーツク総合振興局管内の小清水町(こしみずちょう)・大空町(おおぞらちょう)・美幌町(びほろちょう)、釧路(くしろ)総合振興局管内の弟子屈町(てしかがちょう)の境界となっている。南側は屈斜路湖に向かって急崖(きゅうがい)のカルデラ壁をなし、北側はオホーツク海に向かって緩やかな山麓(さんろく)が広がる。山体は古い安山岩からなり、北斜面は針葉・広葉の樹林帯で自然休養林に指定されている。山頂は草地が広がり高山植物がみられ、東側山腹まで自動車道があり登山も容易である。頂上からは南に屈斜路湖のほか硫黄(いおう)山、摩周岳、西別岳など、北に濤沸(とうふつ)湖、網走湖、サロマ湖などを眺望できる。
