A town in Nyu District, Fukui Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. The entire town is mountainous, with a fishing community centered on a narrow coastal terrace, where sardines, mackerel, and other fish are caught, and Echizen crabs and sea urchins are local specialties. The Echizen Cape area is home to daffodil colonies. Cape Echizen and Shikaura Beach are part of the Echizen Kaga Coast Quasi-National Park, and there is also a swimming beach. In February 2005, Asahi Town, Oda Town, and Miyazaki Village from Nyu District were incorporated, and the town hall became the former Asahi Town Hall. 153.15 km2 . Population 23,160 (2010).
