The name of the track of East Japan Railway Company and West Japan Railway Company. The 105.4 km long line between Matsumoto (Nagano Prefecture) and Itoigawa (Niigata Prefecture) is a single track. The Matsumoto-Minamiotari section is DC electrified. It runs along the Chikuni Kaido road through the Takase River and Hime River basins that flow at the eastern foot of the Hida Mountains, connecting the Matsumoto Basin and the Japan Coast. There are tourist spots along the line such as Omachi, the entrance to Kurobe Dam, Azumino, and Nishina Sanko, and direct trains are also operated from Tokyo and Nagoya. The Matsumoto-Shinano Omachi section was opened by the Shinano Railway in 1915-1916 (Taisho 4-5), electrified in 1925, and nationalized in 1937 (Showa 12) and incorporated into the Oito Minami Line. Additionally, the sections north of Shinano-Omachi were constructed from Shinano-Omachi and Itoigawa as the Oito South Line and North Line, respectively, and opened between 1929 and 1935, except for the Nakado-Kotaki section, but construction was halted during World War II, and the entire line opened in 1957 (Showa 32), becoming the Oito Line. Electrification was completed between 1959 and 1967 between Shinano-Omachi and Minami-Otari. In 1987, following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, the Matsumoto-Minami-Otari section came under the control of East Japan Railway Company, and the Minami-Otari-Itoigawa section came under the control of West Japan Railway Company.
