Polar desert soil

...It is unclear whether arctic desert soils are distributed in the Arctic. In the well-drained desert pavements of the polar regions of northern Canada and northern Greenland, polar desert soils containing about 6% soil organic matter derived from lichens, algae, and diatoms in the surface layer, with accumulated carbonates, and an alkaline reaction, are found. In the tundra climate of the polar region, where the monthly mean temperature is above 0°C for only 2 to 4 months, precipitation is generally low (annual precipitation of 250 to 300 mm) and permafrost exists underground.
