A building that uses wood for the main structural parts. Wood is readily available, easy to obtain, and easy to process, so wooden architecture is as old as the history of housing. It developed in lumber-rich regions such as Northern Europe, China, Korea, Southeast Asia, and Japan. In Japan, since Buddhist architecture was introduced from the continent during the Asuka and Nara periods, a unique architectural style was established, and the country has a long tradition of technology that continues to this day. Wood is widely used for housing because of its freedom of shape and processing and short construction time, but it has shortcomings in fire resistance and durability, and has been considered unsuitable for large-scale buildings in modern times. However, the development of laminated timber has opened up new possibilities for structural construction, and the warmth and familiarity of wooden buildings has been reevaluated, so wooden construction is becoming more and more popular in large-scale public buildings.
