Locating deposits of minerals such as ore, coal, and oil, and investigating their location, form, grade, and reserves. Although the type of work varies depending on the type of deposit, generally, a geological and depositological survey (surface exploration) is conducted from the surface to examine outcrops, rock types, faults, stratigraphy, and alteration of the parent rock, and a geological map is created. Based on the results of this, the area is narrowed down using physical exploration (magnetic and electrical exploration are often used for metal deposits, while seismic and gravity exploration are often used for oil and coal) and chemical exploration, drilling is done in areas where deposits are expected to exist, and tunnels are further excavated (tunnel exploration) to directly confirm the deposits.

鉱石，石炭，石油などの鉱床をさがし出し，位置，形態，品位，埋蔵量などを調査すること。鉱床の種類により作業形態は異なるが，一般に地表から露頭，岩種，断層，層序，母岩の変質など，地質学的・鉱床学的調査（地表探鉱）を行って地質図を作成する。この結果に基づいて物理探査（金属鉱床では磁気探鉱，電気探鉱を多用，石油・石炭では地震探鉱，重力探鉱を多用）や化学探鉱により地域を限定していき，鉱床存在の予想される場所にボーリングを行い，さらに坑道を掘って（坑道探鉱）直接鉱床を確認する。
