Located almost in the center of the Willamette Valley, known as a fertile agricultural region, the city has developed industries such as agricultural processing of fruits and vegetables, meat processing, paper manufacturing, and wood products. In 1840, Methodist missionaries settled on the Willamette River to evangelize the Indians.
