Vedic, an ancient language of Sanskrit, is very close to the language of the Avestan texts, which belongs to the neighboring Iranian language group, and since the speakers of both groups called themselves Aryan, it is assumed that they once formed a single language group. Therefore, the languages of the Indian group are also called Indo-Aryan. This term is also useful for distinguishing them from the non-Indo-European Dravidian languages also spoken on the Indian subcontinent.

The term Sanskrit is a kind of language that is spoken in the Middle Indo-Aryan language family. It is a language of the people, which is called 'natural prākṛta', whereas Sanskrit is a language of the refined and perfected 'saṃskṛta'.
