A rod that can rotate around a fixed point (fulcrum). Also called a lever. When forces P and Q act perpendicular to the rod at distances a and b from the fulcrum, if Pa = Qb, the two forces are balanced (balance, scale, etc.). Using this, if a > b, a small force P can produce a large force Q (scissors, pliers, nail puller, can opener, etc.). It is widely used in machines and tools.
