It is an island located at the outlet of the Gulf of Corinth, belonging to the Ionian Islands in western Greece. In classical Greek it was called Ithakē, and in English it is called Ithaca. Its area is 84 km2, and its population is about 5,000 (1971). It is a mountainous region separated into north and south by a narrow isthmus, and produces olive oil, wine, and raisins.
