Diseases caused by abnormalities in the immune system can be primary or secondary. Primary immunodeficiencies are congenital maturation disorders of the tissues that perform immune functions, and include disorders of cellular immunity, mainly caused by thymus-derived lymphocytes, and humoral immunity, mainly caused by bone marrow-derived lymphocytes. Secondary immunodeficiencies occur when disease spreads to lymphatic tissues that perform mature immune functions, and can be caused by AIDS caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), lymph node destruction caused by malignant lymphoma, or dysfunction of lymphatic tissues caused by radiation exposure.

免疫機構の異常によって起る疾患で，原発性のものと，2次的なものとがある。原発性の免疫不全症は，免疫機能を営む組織の先天的な成熟障害であり，胸腺由来リンパ球を中心とした細胞性免疫の障害と，骨髄由来リンパ球を中心とする体液性免疫機能障害とがある。2次的免疫不全症は，成熟した免疫機能を営むリンパ系組織に病変が波及するために起るもので，ヒト免疫不全症ウイルス (HIV) によるエイズ (AIDS) や，悪性リンパ腫でリンパ節が破壊される場合，放射線照射によるリンパ系組織の機能障害などの場合がある。
