A Joruri term. In Ningyo Joruri or Kabuki, the narrator and shamisen perform on the stage (yuka) in front of the audience. In the old Joruri period, the narrator performed behind the puppeteer, but from around the Genroku period (1688-1704), it became popular for the puppeteer, narrator, and shamisen to perform on stage during scenes such as Michiyuki and Keigoto. At the time, they performed on the same stage as the puppeteers. In modern Ningyo Joruri, narrators often perform on stage not only during the kiriba (cut scenes) of each act, but also during the side scenes where the narrator should perform behind the blinds (upper right corner as you face the stage). In Kabuki, the area where the tokiwazu and kiyomoto perform is called yamadai, and the yuka is used only for the takemoto (→chobo) in Gidayu Kyogen.
