A Buddhist term meaning a perfect teaching. In Chinese Buddhism, the ideas of various sutras and treatises were classified and the depth of the teachings was examined, and the ultimate perfect teaching was named the perfect teaching. People involved in this classification include Huiguang of the Northern Wei dynasty, Zhiyi of Tiantai, Fazo of the Tang dynasty, and Yuanzheng of the Tang dynasty. Huiguang and Fazo considered the Avatamsaka Sutra to be the ultimate perfect teaching, while Zhiyi considered the Lotus Sutra to be the ultimate perfect teaching. Genzheng considered Shingon Esoteric Buddhism to be one great perfect teaching, and the Japanese Tendai Esoteric Buddhism adopted and developed this theory. The term perfect teaching is particularly often used in the Tendai sect, which believes that everything transcends discrimination, blends into each other, and completes each other. 仏教用語。円満な教えの意。中国仏教では諸経論の思想を分類し,教えの浅深を検討することが行われたが,そのなかで究極的な完全な教えを円教と名づけた。この分類にたずさわった人に,北魏の慧光,天台智 顗,唐の法蔵,唐の元政などがいる。慧光,法蔵は『華厳経』,智 顗は『法華経』を究極的な円教とみなした。元政は真言密教を一大円教となし,日本天台の密教はこの説を採用し発展させたもの。円教という語は,すべてが差別をこえ,互いにとけあい互いに完成すると考える天台宗において特に多く用いられる。
