An old town in Munakata County in northern Fukuoka Prefecture. The main settlement is at the base of the southern Watari Peninsula, and prospered as a port town halfway between Hakata and Kanmon. Suburban agriculture is thriving. The coast is part of Genkai Quasi-National Park. It is home to Miyajidake Shrine, over 300 ancient tombs, and the Kyushu University Fisheries Research Station. In January 2005, it merged with Fukuma Town in Munakata County to become a city, called Fukutsu City. 23.28 km2 . Population: 14,194 (2003). 福岡県北部,宗像(むなかた)郡の旧町。主集落は渡(わたり)半島南側基底部にあり,博多と関門の中間の港町として繁栄した。都市近郊農業が盛ん。海岸は玄海国定公園に属する。宮地嶽(みやじだけ)神社,300余の古墳群,九州大学水産実験所がある。2005年1月宗像郡福間町と合併し市制,福津市となる。23.28km2。1万4194人(2003)。
