There are brisk walking, where you walk at a slightly increased speed, and long walking, where you walk with small dumbbells as an auxiliary tool. Since walking is a basic human movement, anyone can do it, and it can be done anywhere without special facilities. In addition, the intensity can be adjusted freely, so it is easy to get used to. Since it is basically an endurance exercise, it is an aerobic exercise that burns fat. It is effective for the body to do exercise equivalent to more than 60% of the maximum heart rate (220 - age) for a certain period of time or more. Jogging is a quick and easy method, but if you are not used to exercising, you are likely to hurt your knees and ankles if you start suddenly. 健康の保持増進やスポーツ感覚で行われる積極的な歩行運動。スピードをやや上げて歩く速歩と長時間歩く時間歩とがある。また，補助器具として小型ダンベルを持って歩くトレーニング歩もある。ウォーキングは人間の基本運動なので，だれでもでき，特別な施設も必要ないのでどこでもできる。また，その強度も自在に調節できるのでなじみやすい。基本的には持久運動なので，脂肪を燃焼させる有酸素運動である。最大心拍数（220−年齢数）の60％超に相当する運動を一定時間以上行うことが身体に効果的である。ジョギングは手軽で簡単な方法であるが，運動習慣のない者がいきなり始めると膝(ひざ)や足首などを痛めやすい。そこで身体に負担が少なく，運動強度の低いウォーキングが，持続的運動の導入としては好ましい。またランニングの姿勢は，ウォーキングのテンポが速くなったものなので，ランニング・フォームの形成の一手段としても使われる。ウォーキングは年々盛んになっており，1997年には，歩行運動に関する研究成果を収集し，広く公開することを目的に日本ウォーキング学会が設立された。
