Hakodate Hachiman Shrine

Japanese: 函館八幡宮 - はこだてはちまんぐう
Hakodate Hachiman Shrine

Located in Yachigashira-cho, Hakodate City, Hokkaido. The deity enshrined is Hondawake-no-Mikoto (Emperor Ojin), with Sumiyoshi-no-Okami and Kotohira-no-Okami also enshrined. It is widely revered throughout Hokkaido as the guardian deity of Hokkaido and the protector deity of development, navigation, and fishing. It is said to have originated in 1445 (Bun'an 2), when the lord of Kameda County, Kono, enshrined Hachiman-gu as the guardian deity of the castle he built in Hakodate. The shrine's location changed after that, but in the Meiji period it became a revered shrine of the Hokkaido Development Commission, and in 1880 (Meiji 13) it moved to its current location, a scenic spot with Mount Hakodate in the background. Formerly a national shrine. The annual festival is held on August 15th. A portable shrine (mikoshi) is carried around the city.
