The buoyancy acting on a floating body such as a ship or marine structure on the water surface acts on the center of volume below the water surface, i.e., the center of buoyancy. The direction of buoyancy is always perpendicular to the water surface regardless of the inclination of the float, so the line of action of buoyancy when the float is upright and the line of action of buoyancy when the float is tilted very slightly intersect above the center of buoyancy B _0. This point is called the metacenter or center of inclination, and the metacenter height B ₀ M above the center of buoyancy is defined as the center of curvature of the path traced by the center of buoyancy as it inclines (Figure).

水面に浮く船，あるいは海洋構造物などの浮体に働く浮力は，水面下の体積中心，すなわち浮心に作用する。浮力の作用方向は浮体の傾斜にかかわらずつねに水面に垂直であるので，浮体が直立しているときの浮力の作用線と，浮体がごくわずか傾斜したときの浮力の作用線は，浮心B₀の上方において交わる。この点をメタセンターまたは傾きの中心と呼び，浮心上メタセンター高さB₀Mは，傾斜に伴い浮心が描く軌跡の曲率中心として定義される（図）。
