Jñyāneshwar (English spelling)

He was a pioneer of the sant poets (sants) of Maharashtra in western India, around 1275-96, and is said to have been the first to promote the idea of bhakti (absolute devotion to God) in that region. He was born into a devout Brahmin family near Pune (Poona), but as a child he was not recognized as a Brahmin by orthodox scholars because his father had broken his sannyasi (ascetic) vows. In 1290 he gave an interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita in Marathi for the people in the village of Newasa, and wrote it as Jnaneshwari.

西部インド，マハーラーシュトラの聖賢詩人(サントsant)の先駆者で，この地のバクティ(神への絶対帰依)思想を最初に鼓吹したといわれる。プネー(プーナ)近郊の敬虔なバラモンの家に生まれたが，父がサニャーシー(修行者)の誓いを破ったとして子どもの彼も正統派教学者からバラモンの地位を認められなかった。1290年にネーワサ村で民衆にマラーティー語で《バガバッドギーター》を解釈し，《ジュニャーネーシュワリー》として著す。
