A perennial plant of the lily family (illustration). It is also known as garlic or, historically, garlic. It is said to have originated in Central Asia or India, but no wild plants have been found, so it is unclear. The bulbs (illustration) are swollen and oblate, and consist of 4 to 10 scales that grow radially. The bulbs are covered in a white or reddish membrane. The leaves are flat, long, pointed, and bluish-white in color. The flower stalks are round and upright, 30 to 60 cm tall, with an umbel at the end, but they do not bear flowers and may produce bulbils (illustration) at the end.
