Adder's tongue fern (Ophioglossum vulgatum)

This is a summer-green fern of the family Ophiopogonaceae, also known as broad-leaved filefish. The rhizome is short and cylindrical, and grows upright. The leaves are about 20 cm long, and only one leaf is produced each year. The vegetative leaves are simple and vary from broadly ovate, elliptical, to broadly lanceolate, and have no petiole. The sporophyll leaves are elongated and upright, and the stalks are wrapped at the base of the vegetative leaves. The spores ripen in early summer and have a net-like pattern on their surface. Filefish species spread their roots widely and produce adventitious buds, which then reproduce vegetatively. In addition to this species, O. petiolatum , O. thermale , and O. kawamurae are known to exist in Japan.
