Ayutthaya - Ayutthaya (English spelling)

Ayutthaya - Ayutthaya (English spelling)

The capital of Ayutthaya Province in central Thailand. It is located about 60 km north of the capital Bangkok, on an island in the middle of a river where the Chao Phraya, Pasak, and Lopburi rivers join. It has a population of 75,916, while the population of the province of the same name is 727,277 (2000). It was once the royal capital, and in 1350 King U-Thong ascended the throne here as King Ramathibodi I, founding the Ayutthaya dynasty. The Ayutthaya dynasty flourished as a powerful nation in the center of the Indochina Peninsula for about 400 years until it was conquered by Burma (now Myanmar) in 1767. At that time, it was a major overseas trading port in Southeast Asia, with many foreigners traveling back and forth, and there was also a Japanese town. The delta around Ayutthaya is also a vast floating rice region, and stable rice cultivation there was the economic foundation of the dynasty. Rice cultivation is still thriving today, forming a large grain-producing region. In addition, shipping by rivers and artificial waterways has developed. As a former royal capital, it is home to numerous ruins and a national museum, attracting many tourists from abroad. In 1991, it was registered as a World Heritage Site along with the surrounding ancient cities (World Cultural Heritage).
