A type of shamisen music. Originally a general term for Edo Nagauta and Bungo-style Joruri (Tokiwazu, Tomimoto, Kiyomoto) that were handed down only in Kyoto and Osaka. Today, it is a part of Kamigatauta and is often used as Mai-no-ji (musical accompaniment), music for vaudeville halls, and geza-uta (backstage songs). It seems to have been used after the Bunka era (1804-18), and many practice books and reference books were published in the early Meiji period.
