French film director. Born in Niort, Deux-Sèvres. After working as an editor and scriptwriter, he worked as an assistant director in Germany. He made his directorial debut with "The Murderer Lives at Number 21" (1942) during World War II. Since then, he has released many popular postwar French films with images full of the sense of the times, such as "The Inquirer" (1943), "The River of Crime" (1947), and "Manon" (1948), and especially showed his terrifying suspense skills in "The Wages of Fear" (1952) and "Les Diaboliques" (1955). He also made a unique documentary, "Picasso: The Secret of a Genius" (1956), in which he filmed Picasso at work through a glass canvas.
