The energy of electrons in a crystal is limited by the properties of quantum mechanics and its lattice structure, and is divided into several continuous band structures. In the case of simple band structures such as semiconductors and insulators, the impossible energy band between the lowest energy position of the conduction band and the highest energy position of the filled band (or valence band) is called the energy gap (or forbidden band width), and it gives characteristics to various physical properties such as electrical conductivity.
