The Third Man

British film. 1949 production. Set in Vienna just after World War II, this suspense thriller revolves around an American writer who becomes suspicious of the accidental death of his best friend. Original story and screenplay by Graham Greene. Directed by Carol Reed. Reed uses many close-ups in a series of short shots, maintaining high tension throughout the film. The cinematography by Robert Krasker (1913-1981), which captures the desolate city of Vienna, and the music by Anton Karas, played only on the zither, are extremely impressive. Actors include Joseph Cotten (1905-1994), Orson Welles, Trevor Howard (1913-1988), and Alida Valli (1921-2006). Winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. Released in Japan in 1952 (Showa 27).

イギリス映画。1949年作品。第二次世界大戦直後のウィーンを舞台に、親友の事故死に疑惑を抱いたアメリカ人作家を中心に展開するサスペンス・スリラー。原作、脚本グレアム・グリーン。監督キャロル・リード。リードは、短いショットの積み重ねのなかにクローズアップを多用し、高い緊張を持続させたまま終局まで一気呵成(かせい)に描ききる。荒涼としたウィーンの街をとらえたロバート・クラスカーRobert Krasker（1913―1981）の撮影と、アントン・カラスのチターのみによる音楽がきわめて印象的である。俳優はジョセフ・コットンJoseph Cotten（1905―1994）、オーソン・ウェルズ、トレバー・ハワードTrevor Howard（1913―1988）、アリダ・バリAlida Valli（1921―2006）ら。カンヌ国際映画祭グランプリ受賞。1952年（昭和27）日本公開。
