A former town in Tokoro District, northeastern Hokkaido. It faces the Sea of Okhotsk, west of Abashiri City, and borders Lake Saroma in the west, with the Tokoro River flowing through the center. Coastal fishing is thriving around Lake Saroma. It produces potatoes, sugar beets, wheat, and other crops. In March 2006, it was incorporated into Kitami City along with Rubeshibe Town and Tanno Town in Tokoro District. 278.29 km2 . 4,997 people (2003). 北海道北東部,常呂郡の旧町。網走市の西隣でオホーツク海に面し,西部はサロマ湖に接し,中央部を常呂川が流れる。サロマ湖では沿岸漁業が盛ん。ジャガイモ,テンサイ,麦類などを産する。2006年3月常呂郡留辺蘂町,端野町と北見市へ編入。278.29km2。4997人(2003)。
