Born: 1686. Bridlington, Yorkshire [Died] April 12, 1748, London. British painter, architect and interior decorator. He first studied painting under a traveling artist, and then went to London at the age of 20. He stayed in Rome from 1709 to 1719, where he met Sir R. Burlington, who became his lifelong patron. He returned to England in 1719 and was subsequently commissioned by the lord to paint murals for Kensington Palace, but soon turned to architecture, and in 1735 was appointed chief artisan to the royal household. His representative works include the Houses of Parliament (1732), the Treasury (1734-1736), Holkham Hall (1734-1761), and Horse Guards (1751-1758).
