Born: 1686. Bridlington, Yorkshire
[Died] April 12, 1748, London. British painter, architect and interior decorator. He first studied painting under a traveling artist, and then went to London at the age of 20. He stayed in Rome from 1709 to 1719, where he met Sir R. Burlington, who became his lifelong patron. He returned to England in 1719 and was subsequently commissioned by the lord to paint murals for Kensington Palace, but soon turned to architecture, and in 1735 was appointed chief artisan to the royal household. His representative works include the Houses of Parliament (1732), the Treasury (1734-1736), Holkham Hall (1734-1761), and Horse Guards (1751-1758).

イギリスの画家，建築家，室内装飾家。初め旅絵師に絵を学び，20歳でロンドンに出た。 1709～19年ローマに滞在，このとき，生涯の後援者となった R.バーリントン卿を知る。 19年帰国，以後卿の依頼を受けてケンジントン宮の壁画装飾などにたずさわったが，まもなく建築に転向，35年，王室付き工匠頭に任命された。国会議事堂案 (1732) ，大蔵省 (34～36) ，ホーカム・ホール (34～61) ，ホース・ガーズ (51～58) などが代表作。
