...Buddhism based on traditional schools that inherited the early Buddhism of the time of Shakyamuni and his direct disciples, and flourished in India, coexisting and competing with Mahayana Buddhism. The newly emerging Mahayana Buddhism denounced it as "Hinayana Buddhism," but it should more correctly be called "Hina Buddhism" or "Abhidharma Buddhism." 100 years after the death of Shakyamuni, that is, around the time of King Ashoka (3rd century BCE), the Buddhist sect split into the conservative Theravada sect and the progressive Mahasanghika sect.
