Finespotted flounder (English spelling)

Japanese: メイタガレイ(目板鰈) - メイタガレイ（英語表記）finespotted flounder

A fish of the family Pleuronectidae (illustration) in the order Pleuronectiformes. It is commonly found along the coasts from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu and Taiwan. Its body is tall and almost diamond-shaped. The eyed side is brown with scattered dark brown spots. There is a single raised edge with strong spines between the eyes, which makes it easy to distinguish from other species. The name Meita comes from this. It is also known as Medaka garai (killed flounder) because its eyes protrude high. The spawning season is from late October to early January in Tokyo Bay, when separated pelagic eggs of about 1.2 mm are laid near the mouth of the bay. A fine tortoiseshell pattern can be seen on the surface of the egg membrane.

カレイ目カレイ科の魚（イラスト）。北海道南部から九州，台湾までの沿岸にふつうに見られる。体は体高が高くひし形に近い。有眼側は褐色で，暗褐色の斑点が散在する。両眼の間に強いとげをもった一つの隆起縁があり，容易に他種と区別できる。メイタの名もこれに由来している。また，眼が高く突き出ているのでメダカガレイの別名もある。産卵期は東京湾で10月下旬～1月上旬で，約1.2mmの分離浮性卵を湾口付近で産む。卵膜表面には微細な亀甲模様が見られる。
