A perennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family (APG classification: Scrophulariaceae). Whole plant, soft. The stem is branched and spreads, 10-30 cm long. The leaves are opposite, ovate, 1-4 cm long, 0.5-2 cm wide, and have a few serrated edges. In summer, yellow flowers bloom in the leaf axils. Both the corolla and calyx are tubular, with five projections at the end of the calyx. The fruit resembles a ground cherry, and is enclosed in a swollen, pouch-like calyx. It grows in wet, mountainous areas from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, Taiwan, and the Himalayas. The name means ground cherry that grows in ditches. About 100 species of the genus Mizo-Nymphaeaceae are known, mainly in North America, and some are cultivated for decorative purposes. Large-leaved ground cherry M. sessilifolius Maxim. grows in wetlands in the mountains on the Sea of Japan side, has stalkless leaves, and large flowers.
