Born on November 11, 1645. The third son of Ikeda Mitsumasa, lord of Okayama Domain in Bizen. He was adopted by Kumazawa Banzan and inherited a fief of 3,000 koku. In 1669, he was granted 15,000 koku by his elder brother, Ikeda Tsunamasa, lord of Okayama Domain, and became the first head of the Ikeda family to rule the Bitchu Okayama Shinden (Ikusaka) Domain.
