During the Edo period, this was a Tozama clan that ruled over the northern part of Mutsu Province, Sannohe (Aomori Prefecture), Ninohe, Kunohe, Hei, Iwate, Shiwa, Hienuki, Waga (Iwate Prefecture), and Kazuno (Akita Prefecture). It is also called the Nanbu clan. In 1590 (Tensho 18), Nanbu Nobunao was granted control of seven districts in Nanbu Province by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and established the clan. Construction of Morioka Castle began in 1598 (Keicho 3) and was completed in 1633 (Kan'ei 10), and it became the Nanbu clan's residence until the Meiji Restoration. After the founder of the clan, Nobunao, Toshinao, Shigenao, Shigenobu, Yukinobu, Nobuoki, Toshimoto, Toshimi, Toshikatsu, Toshimasa, Toshitaka, Toshimochi (there are two because he died young and a cousin took his place), Toshitada, Toshiyoshi (Nobutomo), Toshihisa, and Toshiyuki, held the fief for 16 generations (17 people). During this time, in 1634, Tokugawa Iemitsu officially recognized the fief of 100,000 koku in 10 counties in the northern part of Mutsu Province, Sannohe, Ninohe, Kunohe, Kazuno, Hei, Iwate, Shiwa, Hienuki, and Waga. In 1664 (Kanbun 4) an internal dispute arose over an inheritance issue, and the Hachinohe Domain's 20,000 koku was divided to 80,000 koku, but in 1683 (Tenwa 3) new rice fields were added, restoring it to 100,000 koku. From the middle of the period onwards, the Morioka Domain suffered from financial difficulties and was often hit by poor harvests and famines. There were also more peasant uprisings than in other domains, and the Sanbei Uprisings of 1847 (Koka 4) and 1853 (Kaei 6) were particularly famous for their large scale. In 1808 (Bunka 5), due to the Ezochi Guard, the Domain was raised to 200,000 koku while keeping its territory the same. During the Boshin War, the area was transferred to Shiroishi (Miyagi Prefecture) with a reduced fief of 130,000 koku as a result of joining the Oshu-Uetsu Alliance, but was soon restored to its former territory. In 1870 (Meiji 3), with the abolition of the feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures, it became Morioka Prefecture, and then Iwate Prefecture.
