Strong, J.

...Understanding the gospel, which had previously only concerned the salvation of individual souls, as a gospel that also brought about social salvation, and addressing social issues, mainly of workers, such as the abolition of child labor and the improvement of working conditions, they became a major force in American churches and theology from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Representative leaders include Washington Gladden (1836-1918), a Congregational Church pastor in Ohio who wrote Social Salvation (1902), Francis G. Peabody (1847-1936), a Unitarian pastor and professor of theology at Harvard University, Josiah Strong (1847-1916), a Congregational Church pastor in Cincinnati who organized the movement as general secretary of the Evangelical Union, and Walter Rauschenbusch (1861-1918), a Northern Baptist professor at Rochester Theological Seminary, who appealed to the hearts and souls of people with the social gospel. In particular, Rauschenbusch's Christianity and the Social Crisis (1907) and The Theology of the Social Gospel (1917) were widely read.
