1613‐1700 French landscape gardener during the reign of Louis XIV. Also spelled Le Nôtre. The Le Nôtre family had been gardeners to the royal household for generations, and André designed landscapes from a broad perspective, from the viewpoint of comprehensive art, including painting and architecture. He is particularly known for creating his own geometric gardens, influenced by the perspective theories of J.F. Niceron and G. Desargues. The château of Vaux-le-Vicomte (1656-61), considered the first Baroque building in France, features a garden by Le Nôtre along with other buildings designed by Le Beau.
