Muromachi-in

The first daughter of Emperor Gohorikawa. Her mother was the daughter of Chunagon Fujiwara Ieyuki. Her name was Teruko. In 1240 (Ninji 1), she became an Imperial Princess, in 1243 (Kangen 1) she became Empress Jusango, and was subsequently given the title of Muromachi-in. In 1246, at the age of 19, she became a nun, and took the Buddhist name Myohokaku. In 1249 (Kencho 1), she was given a vast estate by her aunt Shikikenmon-in, which she called the Muromachi-in estate. Later, this estate was contested between the Daikakuji and Jimyo-in lines, and was divided in half.

後堀河(ごほりかわ)天皇の第一皇女。母は中納言藤原家行の女(むすめ)。名は暉子。1240年（仁治1）内親王、43年（寛元1）准三后(じゅさんごう)、ついで室町院の院号宣下(せんげ)を受け、46年19歳で落飾、法名は妙法覚。49年（建長1）叔母の式乾門院(しきけんもんいん)より膨大な御領を譲られ、これを室町院領と称した。のちこの御領は大覚寺(だいかくじ)、持明院(じみょういん)両統で争われ、折半された。
