The first daughter of Emperor Gohorikawa. Her mother was the daughter of Chunagon Fujiwara Ieyuki. Her name was Teruko. In 1240 (Ninji 1), she became an Imperial Princess, in 1243 (Kangen 1) she became Empress Jusango, and was subsequently given the title of Muromachi-in. In 1246, at the age of 19, she became a nun, and took the Buddhist name Myohokaku. In 1249 (Kencho 1), she was given a vast estate by her aunt Shikikenmon-in, which she called the Muromachi-in estate. Later, this estate was contested between the Daikakuji and Jimyo-in lines, and was divided in half.
