Königswald - Gustav Heinrich Ralph von Königswald

German paleontologist and paleoanthropologist. After receiving his education in Germany, he became a professor at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, and conducted paleontological surveys in Southeast Asia from the 1930s onwards. He particularly conducted research on Quaternary strata on the Indonesian island of Java, where he discovered many important fossils of ancient hominins. These include Homo erectus, an archaic human called Solo man, and Meganthropus, thought to be the ancestor of Javan man. He also discovered Gigantopithecus, which he discovered by chance in a tooth fossil sold at a Chinese pharmacy in Hong Kong, and which has attracted attention as an extinct Quaternary ape. During World War II, he was mistaken for a Dutchman and interned in Japan, but returned to Utrecht University after the war. In his later years, he left the university and moved to the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt, West Germany.

ドイツの古生物学者、古人類学者。ドイツで教育を受けたのちオランダのユトレヒト大学教授となり、1930年代以降、東南アジアで古生物学的調査を行った。とくにインドネシアのジャワ島で第四紀層の研究を進め、多くの重要な古人類化石を発見した。それらはジャワ原人（ホモ・エレクトゥス）、旧人のソロ人、ジャワ原人の祖先型と考えられるメガントロプスなどである。また香港(ホンコン)の中国薬店で売られていた歯の化石から偶然に発見したギガントピテクスは、絶滅した第四紀の類人猿として注目されている。第二次世界大戦のおり、オランダ人と間違えられて日本に抑留されたが、戦後ユトレヒト大学に戻った。晩年に同大学を辞し、旧西ドイツ、フランクフルトのゼンケンベルク博物館に移った。
